Wiring Up Your Future with a Computer Networking Degree

Gear heads: Listen up. There's a new gig in town that's right up your alley. It's time to retire that old creeper and drip pan and jump into the twenty first century. This new line of work will still utilize your mechanical know-how, but will probably do a lot more for your bank account. The job is called computer networking.
What does computer networking have to do with fixing cars, you ask? Just think about it. In order to fix, maintain, or fine tune a car, you need to know how a car works and how to put it together. You also need to have the patience to solve a problem using multiple methods if the first method doesn't work.
Computer networking jobs require these same skills. In addition to having a basic knowledge of computer hardware and software, those looking for a computer networking career must have a similar problem solving ability.
First Step - Learn Computer Networking
You'll have to take a few computer networking training classes to give you a foundation of knowledge. Just like tinkering with the jalopy in the garage, these classes will familiarize you with computer systems such as Linux, Unix, and Microsoft NT.
The differences between these operating systems are relatively small, just like the differences between a fuel injected engine and a diesel engine.
Distance Learning - Dip your Toe in the Pool before Taking the Plunge
Here's a plan. Before you tell your boss at the body shop that you're heading for greener pastures, take an online computer networking class. This way, you'll build some basic skills while still earning a living.
After building your knowledge base with a few of these classes, you can then search for some computer networking jobs. You'll be amazed at the number of these jobs available at any given time. Hopefully, you'll be able to interview and land one of the jobs - making it quite easy for you to donate your old oil-stained jumpsuit to charity.
